Zwei Frauen und zwei Offiziere im Café. 1915.
Brush and India ink.
On yellow paper. 29.8 x 16.8 cm (11.7 x 6.6 in), size of sheet. [AM/CH].

• Dense pen and ink drawing in E. L. Kirchner's inimitable style.
• Of outstanding graphic expressiveness.
• In the artist's characteristic, nervous style.
• Originally owned by the textile artist Lise Gujer (1893-1967). Kirchner met her after he moved to Davos, he remained close friends with her until the end of his life.
• From 1923, Gujer produced her first works based on E. L. Kirchner's designs on an old handloom from Graubünden

Als dieses schmale, wegen seines Hochformats und des gelben Papiers auffällige Blatt 1956 (erstmals?) im schweizerischen Kunsthandel auftauchte, trug es den Titel "Vier Frauen in Interieur“. Hermann Gerlinger meinte, in den Personen "Offiziere im Café“ zu erkennen. Genauere Recherchen bestätigen dies und zeigen, dass 1. der Offizier rechts knieabwärts dunkle Schaftstiefel trägt. Dazu eine Hose, die oberhalb des Knies – typisch für eine Offiziersreithose – eine ausgestellte Form ("Ballon“) besitzt. Zudem trägt er Schulterstücke. 2. Der Offizier hinten links vor der Täfelung trägt eine tailliert geschnittene Oberbekleidung und ebenfalls "Epauletten“, deutlich hervortretende Schulterstücke. 3. Die beiden vorderen Figuren – zwei jüngere Damen – begleiten die Offiziere. Diese Szene lässt sich in den Titel fassen: "Zwei Frauen und zwei Offiziere im Café“.

In good condition consistent with its age. A few slight creases and very isolated tiny nicks in the margins. In the center of the sheet with a horinzontal crease. The margins slightly irregular, the sheet tapering towards the bottom. The sheet laid on brown paper.
